Petition: Say No To Guns

SAY NO TO GUNS The Karachi Bioethics Group (KBG) strongly opposes the weaponization of Pakistani society. Every day Pakistanis are falling to guns and deaths by targeted and random shootings are on the rise. No segment of society is safe any longer. According to the figure of Human Rights Commission in Pakistan, in Karachi alone –

• 747 shot dead in 2009

• 1981 shot dead in 2010

• 2200 shot dead in 2011

• 2400 shot dead in 2012

This is more than the number of people killed during this period by drone attacks. The State itself promotes this violence when it issues illegal and unregulated licenses for weapons. In the last 5 years the Federal Government has issued 1.2 million weapon licenses and the Sindh government alone handed out 0.4 million licenses. In the same period, 69,000 licenses for prohibited bore weapons were provided to 342 MNAs. The Constitution states that it is the duty of the State to safeguard and protect, not endanger the lives of its citizens. We demand that the government must –

 We believe a review of The Pakistan Arms Ordinance 1965 is imperative.

 Restrict licensing and provision of weapons to only the armed forces and law enforcing agencies in Pakistan

 De-weaponize society to help ensure security of its citizens
